Caleb Riedel and Garrett Kennedy combined to keep Millard West perfect on Monday night against Omaha Westside.

Riedel tossed a five-hit shutout, and Kennedy delivered the walk-off RBI single as the top-ranked Wildcats prevailed 1-0. Millard West moved to 15-0 while the Warriors fell to 9-6.

Riedel and Westside starter Cole Payton battled through six scoreless innings. The visiting Warriors were retired in order in the top of the seventh, giving the Wildcats a chance to stretch their win streak.

Catcher Jackson Meier got the rally started with a one-out walk. After Payton notched his seventh strikeout, courtesy runner Caleb Neville stole second.

That brought up the No. 9 batter Kennedy, a UNO recruit who has struggled at the plate this season. But he delivered Monday night by belting a clean single to left field, scoring Neville with the winning run on a close play at the plate.

“I told (left fielder) Preston Menicucci before we came up that we needed a walk-off,’’ Kennedy said. “I got the fastball I was looking for, so that was a big senior moment for me.’’

Millard West coach Steve Frey agreed.

“It was great to see Garrett come through,’’ he said. “Both pitchers were lights out, so any hits were tough to come by.’’

Westside only had one runner reach second base against Riedel, and that came in the first inning. Henry Zipay drew a leadoff walk and advanced on a two-out single by Cam Kully but was stranded at second.

Riedel had at least one strikeout in six of the seven innings and fanned nine. He also was the beneficiary of two double plays, including one in the final inning that negated a leadoff single by pinch-hitter JD DiPrima.

After that 5-4-3 double play, the left-hander retired Trevor Barajas on a groundout to end the seventh. Riedel threw 104 pitches and was not going back to the mound if the game went extra innings.

“I had good control of my fastball,’’ he said. “I pounded that outside corner most of the game.’’

Riedel, who posted his third victory of the spring, said he was happy to see the Wildcats end the game in the seventh.

“It was exciting when Garrett barreled up that pitch,’’ he said. “It was a tough game, but we pulled it out.’’

Kennedy, who was hitless in two previous trips to the plate, said it felt good to contribute to the victory.

“My hitting has been a little shaky, but I’m not getting discouraged,’’ he said. “I’ve been seeing the ball a lot better lately, so hopefully I can keep this going.’’

Payton, who gave up five hits, was the hard-luck loser.

“We couldn’t hit his curveball,’’ Frey said. “But we did just enough in that last inning to squeeze out a run.’’
